Seperti blues, musik rock juga berisi perlawanan hati. Bisa juga berbau kematian. Simak ini: Goodbye
cruel world; I’m leaving you today; Goodbye all you people; There’s
nothing you can say to make me change my mind; Goodbye…

Penggalan lirik lagu Goodbye Cruel World dari album The Wall
(1979) Pink Floyd itu agaknya cocok untuk menggambarkan kondisi para
rocker yang mati muda. Kematian akibat ketidaknyamanan hidup di tengah
lamuran harta dan popularitas.

Narkoba, alkohol, seks bebas, seolah jadi bagian tak terpisahkan
dari perjalanan hidup musisi rock. Mereka yang mengagungkan semboyan sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll itu akhirnya justru meregang nyawa di saat usia mereka belum lagi menginjak 30 tahun.

Ingat saja kematian Jim Morrison, vokalis grup legendaris The Doors,
yang mati di usia 27. Begitu pula Jimi Hendrix. Bahkan, Sid Vicious,
pemain bas legenda punk Sex Pistols, mati saat usianya baru 21 akibat
narkoba. Ia depresi karena didakwa membunuh Nancy Spongen, pacarnya.

The World Almanac and Book of Facts (1997) mencatat, ada 42
legenda rock di AS dan Inggris mati sia-sia. Terbanyak akibat serangan
jantung. Kuat dugaan, hal itu berhubungan dengan kebiasaan memakai
narkoba atau menenggak alkohol berlebihan.

Elvis Presley, misalnya, berpulang di usia 42. Gitaris dan vokalis
genius Rory Gallagher tutup usia di usia 47. Keduanya pergi ke alam
baka dipicu narkoba. Di luar sebab itu, ada 36 rocker yang mati bunuh
diri dan 57 lainnya karena sebab lain, termasuk kecelakaan.

Selain itu, 18 musisi rock pada 1970-an tewas dibunuh. Yang paling fenomenal, tentu, John Lennon. Frontliner The Beatles itu ditembak di depan apartemennya oleh Mark Chapman pada 1980.

Tak kalah mengejutkan adalah hasil penelitian John Moores University, Liverpool, Inggris. Riset yang dilansir jurnal Epidemial Community Health itu mengungkapkan, musisi rock cenderung mati lebih cepat ketimbang musisi  aliran musik lainnya.

Penelitian panjang yang dilakukan pada 1956-2005 itu memaparkan,
terjadi 100 kematian di antara 1.064 musisi rock. Riset itu mengupas
kematian para musisi dunia dari era Elvis Presley hingga Limp Bizkit.

Riset dilakukan atas para musisi Inggris dan Amerika Utara. Lebih
dari 25% kematian itu terkait erat dengan penyalahgunaan narkoba dan
minuman berkadar alkohol tinggi.

Riset itu juga memaparkan, pada lima tahun pertama setelah mencapai
ketenaran, kematian musisi rock lebih tinggi ketimbang angka normal. Di
antaranya terjadi pada Jimi Hendrix, Bon Scott (AC/DC), dan Sid
Vicious.

Gilanya lagi, rocker dari Amerika Utara punya kemungkinan dua kali lebih besar mati muda, terutama akibat serangan jantung dan stroke. Termasuk di dalamnya adalah Jerry Garcia dari Grateful Dead, Carl Wilson dari Beach Boys, dan Johnny Ramone dari Ramones.

Itu, konon, karena rocker dari Amerika Utara masih ingin menunjukkan
kharisma besarnya dengan menggelar tur reuni. “Akibatnya, mereka
kembali menjalani gaya hidup rock ‘n roll yang lekat dengan drugs dan alkohol selama bertahun-tahun,” kata Mark Bellis, peneliti utama dalam riset itu.

Kehidupan musisi klasik rock itu memang bisa dirunut dari gemuruh
era 1960-an di belahan Barat yang hiruk-pikuk dengan gerakan pembaruan
politik, ekonomi, dan sosial.

Dekade itu jadi era gerakan kontrakultur yang dipelopori generasi
muda bersimbol perlawanan seperti The Beatles dan The Rolling Stones di
Inggris atau Led Zeppelin dan The Doors di AS.

Perlawanan itu jadi lengkap dengan munculnya gerakan muda anti-Perang Vietnam melalui gaya hidup bebas flower generation ala hippies.

Musik rock kemudian mengawinkan diri dengan gaya hippies yang
terangkum secara sempurna dalam fenomena pergelaran musik fenomenal
‘Summer of Love and Peace’ di Woodstock, AS, pada 1967.

Gelombang budaya besar itulah yang mengesahkan pemakaian narkoba
berlebihan sebagai sebuah norma dalam kehidupan anak muda saat itu. Tak
heran jika satu per satu rocker tumbang menemui ajal.

Tentu, tak semua rocker akhirnya bernasib tragis seperti itu.
Vokalis The Rolling Stones Mick Jagger hingga kini masih bugar. Usianya
sudah 65. Juga vokalis Aerosmith Steven Tyler yang kini berusia 60 dan
Johnny Rotten, vokalis Sex Pistols.

Roger Daltery hingga kini juga masih hidup di usia 64. Padahal,
vokalis The Who itu dikenal sebagai rocker yang sejak awal menyatakan
ingin mati muda. Itu, setidaknya, tercermin dari lagu My Generation (1965). Simak salah satu bagian liriknya: I hope I die before I get old.

Jadi, pasti, penyebab berderet rocker legendaris mati muda itu
sebetulnya bukan karena mereka bermain musik rock. Penyebabnya adalah
gaya hidup mereka yang mengarah urakan. Karena itu, jangan takut untuk
terus memainkan musik rock. Mainkan!

Club 27, Misteri Rocker Top

Bermodal lengkingan vokal, musik cadas, dan
gaya panggung impresif, berderet rocker dunia melegenda. Tapi, ada
misteri di balik semua itu. Club 27 dimunculkan mengiringi tragedi mati
muda mereka. Rata-rata di usia 27!

Memang, rocker-rocker top di belantara musik keras itu tidak
tergeletak menyabung nyawa ketika manggung. Penyebab kematian mereka
beragam. Mulai kecelakaan mobil, over dosis narkoba, sampai yang lebih mengenaskan: bunuh diri.

Hanya saja, satu yang pasti dan seolah jadi takdir bersama, yaitu
para rocker legendaris itu menghembuskan napas terakhirnya di usia
muda. Yang menarik dan menarik sekaligus misterius, ajal menjemput
mereka ketika usia memasuki hitungan ke-27!

Bagi komunitas musik rock, tentu masih lekat dalam ingatan kisah tragis para rocker legendaris itu. Sebut saja frontliner
grup musik grunge Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, yang menyusul para seniornya
seperti Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, dan Brian Jones, eks pemetik bas
The Rolling Stones.

Kematian mereka pun sama-sama menimbulkan spekulasi teori konspirasi
lantaran kesamaan usia dan kasusnya. Sebagian penggemar mereka menyebut
para musisi yang mati di usia 27 itu sebagai anggota Club 27.

Club 27 beranggotakan sejumlah legenda. Dari data yang dihimpun INILAH.COM,
jumlahnya mencapai 13 rocker. Di antara mereka adalah Kurt Cobain (5
April 1994), Brian Jones (3 Juli 1969), Jimi Hendrix (18 September
1970), Jim Morrison (3 Juli 1970), dan legenda vokalis blues Janis
Joplin (4 Oktober 1970).

Ada juga gitaris blues Robert Johnson yang tewas lebih dulu, yaitu
pada 1938. Lalu, Kristen Pfaff (penabuh drum Hole), Ron ‘Pigpen’
McKernan (The Grateful Dead), Dave Alexander (The Stooges), vokalis
Johnny Kidd (Johnny Kid and The Pirates), Kami (Malice Mizer dari
Jepang), Mia Zapata (The Gits), Peter Ham (Badfinger), dan D Boon
(Minutemen).

Di antara para legenda yang mati di usia 27 itu, ada dua kasus yang
menimbulkan teori konspirasi paling menonjol, yaitu menyangkut kematian
Kurt Cobain dan Brian Jones. Keduanya diduga mati akibat pembunuhan
sistematis.

Hingga kini, spekulasi tentang pembunuhan Jones dan Cobain masih
jadi bahan riset untuk pembuatan film dan penulisan buku yang cukup
tersohor.

Pada kematian Jones, ia ditengarai dibunuh oleh pihak yang ingin
menyingkirkannya. Tak terkecuali dua sahabat dekat yang awalnya justru
direkrutnya ke The Rolling Stones, yakni vokalis Mick Jagger dan
gitaris Keith Richards.

Jones sendiri sudah berkalang tanah hampir empat dasawarsa. Ia
ditemukan tenggelam di kolam renang rumahnya di Hartfield, Sussex,
Inggris. Menurut kesaksian Anna Wohlin, pacarnya, Jones masih
menunjukan tanda-tanda kehidupan ketika diangkat dari air. Tapi, ketika
dokter datang, Jones malah dinyatakan tewas di tempat.

Pada 2000, Wohlin menuding Frank Thorogood yang membangun rumah
Jones sebagai pembunuhnya. Menurut Wohlin, Thorogood menunjukan sikap
tak simpatik kepada Jones yang tengah sekarat. Dokter sendiri
menyatakan pada jantung dan hati Jones terdapat kandungan narkoba dan
alkohol.

Versi teori konspirasi lain lebih menggemparkan. Jones yang tewas
beberapa saat setelah keluar dari Stones, sempat berselisih dengan
Jagger dan Richards karena sering absen dari aktivitas grup musik itu.
Termasuk pada sesi rekaman.

Kecurigaan menguat ketika di prosesi pemakaman anggota Stones yang
hadir hanya Bill Wyman dan Charlie Watts. Jagger beralasan dilarang
meninggalkan lokasi syutingnya di Australia. Richards beralasan tak
ingin bertemu penggemar yang marah kepadanya akibat Jones keluar dari
Stones.

Puncaknya adalah berembusnya isu bahwa Jones memang sengaja
dikorbankan kepada setan. Sebab, saat itu Stones dituding sebagai
pemuja setan menyusul single-nya yang bertajuk Sympathy for the Devil. Jones dikorbankan sebagai pembayaran atas kesuksesan Stones.

Pada kematian Cobain, teori konspirasi yang berkembang adalah ia
dibunuh oleh Courtney Love, istrinya sendiri. Vokalis grup musik grunge
perempuan Hole itu memang dalam posisi kurang menguntungkan.

Love saat itu tengah berselisih dengan Cobain yang berencana
menceraikannya. Love dicurigai takut kehilangan warisan Cobain yang
sedang berjaya.

Spekulasi lain menyebutkan, Cobain dibunuh oleh sejumlah pelaku
industri rekaman yang banyak menaungi kepentingannya. Di antaranya
adalah Geffen Records. Mereka, konon, sengaja membunuh Cobain demi
menciptakan seorang rock hero baru.

Cobain ditemukan tewas di rumahnya di Lake Washington dengan sepucuk
pistol di sampingnya. Analisis polisi mengungkap, Cobain bersembunyi di
sudut flat, mengambil pistol, memasukkan benda itu ke ke mulutnya, dan
dor…menekan pelatuknya.

Penggemar Cobain tak bisa menerima argumen itu. Apalagi, beberapa
saat sebelum kematiannya, Cobain diketahui mengkonsumsi narkoba. Ia
teler. Tak mungkin mampu menembak dirinya sendiri.

The band was discovered by Grand Funk Railroad record producer Terry Knight and signed to Capitol Records. Knight produced the first three, and most popular, Bloodrock albums.

Bloodrock was best known for the song “D.O.A.” (Dead On Arrival), about the victim of a gory airplane crash which became their only hit single, reaching #36 on the music charts in January 1971. They were only marginally popular in the United Statescult band, but reportedly became a favorite among troops in Vietnam. and were essentially a

The band was technically competent but offered little that was
unique and was unable to sustain any real success. The group was noted
for hard pulsed bass, biting guitar solos and a haunting organ sound.

The early albums featured a heavy metal sound reminiscent of other hard rock bands at the time, such as Grand Funk Railroad and Black Sabbath. The lyrics
were unusually cynical for the time, exploring such themes as
alienation and revenge, which would later be found in abundance in the punk rock scene, but seemed out of place in the post-Woodstock
period of the early 1970s. Songs which were fan favorites included
“Kool-Aid Kids,” “Gotta Find a Way”, “Castle of Thoughts”, “Breach of
Lease”, “Cheater”, “D.O.A.”, and “Lucky in the Morning.”

Before the late 1972 album Passage, their original lead vocalist (Jim Rutledge) and lead guitarist (Lee Pickens) had left and were replaced by vocalist Warren Ham (a born-again Christian who would later perform with Kerry Livgren’s Christian rockA.D. in the 1980s). Bloodrock took a major turn away from hard rock on the last two albums, turning toward progressive rock, pop, and jazz, reminiscent of such artists as Jethro Tull, Todd Rundgren, and Traffic.
During live performances in the Warren Ham era, the band often refused
to play their earlier songs with morbid or cynical themes such as
“Whiskey Vengeance” and “D.O.A.”. Interestingly, though, the lyrics on
the later albums often had leftist or even Marxist themes on songs like “The Power”. band

The 2000 CD release Triptych includes their last two albums (Passage & Whirlwind Tongues) plus an additional, previously unreleased album, Unspoken Words, recorded by the band in mid 1974 before their official breakup.

A reunion concert featuring five of the six original numbers (Jim Rutledge, Lee Pickens, Ed Grundy,Nick Taylor, *Chris Taylor (*in place of original drummer Rick Cobb III) was held on March 12, 2005 in Ft. Worth, for the benefit of their keyboardist Stevie Hill.

Funny how one comes to discover
new music. During a recent trip to South America a savvy clerk
recommended I purchase a copy of Kin Ping Meh’s
self-titled debut album. 
I was actually searching for some Groundhogs and Atomic Rooster
records, but he insisted.  This kraut prog band is ‘buenazo’
he said. I followed the tip and dished out about $1.50. It
was worth every cent. Kin Ping Meh may be commonly lumped with
the progressive German movement of the 70’s, but truth be told,
their music was not an insatiable display of technique, but of
melody and songwriting.  Read on and spread the word….


The career of rock band Kin Ping Meh from
Mannheim lasted almost exactly seven years and reached quite a
few heights. But it still left the band rather disillusioned in
the end. Drummer Kalle Weber’s resume from the Spring of 1977:
"If you’re not a pop star, you’re still the asshole."  Together
with amateur musicians Werner Stephan (vocals), Joachim Schafer
(guitar, piano), Frieder Schmitt (organ piano) and Torsten
Herzog (bass), Weber had formed Kin Ping Meh in 1970. The name
Kin Ping Meh (meaning "branch of a plum blossom in a golden
vase") is taken from a Chinese 16th century novel depicting the
life and customs of that time. On September 15, 1970 the band
gave their first concert. Over the next months, they took part
in seven important talent competitions. They won them all and
were offered a recording contract from Polydor. From now on,
everything went very quick - the important Sunday paper "Bild am
Sonntag" had a two-page report about the band in January and
their first single was released in February. ‘Everything’s My
Way’ made the Top 5 of various radio playlists and March saw the
band tour with The Hollies. In May it was back to the studio to
record the second single, ‘Everyday’. After guitarist Willie
Wagner replaced Joachim Schafer, the band from Mannheim recorded
and produced their debut album in autumn 1971, and in December
it hit the stores. The band was almost constantly touring at
that time and supported acts like

Uriah Heep.


1972 was a very good year for Kin Ping Meh.
They wrote the music for a drug musical called ‘Rausch’,
composed the soundtrack for ZDF series "Sechs unter Millionen"
(Weber said in an interview: "We tried to make good rock music
because for us, this job is an important milestone, a big step
ahead in our career") and thus joined the short list of German
rock bands who had achieved something similar, e.g.

Can with ‘Spoon’, their song for a
Durbridge crime movie, or Popol Vuh for the Herzog movie
‘Aguirre, der Zom Gottes’. Almost simultaneously, they opened
the Sailing Olympics in Kiel, went on tour with

Rory Gallagher and

Golden 

Earring, and released their
second album, ‘No. 2′.  In their annual vote, the readers of
magazine "Popfoto" voted them among the Top 5 in the category,
‘Most Promising Band’. But they had to pay a high price for
constantly being on the road - 1972 saw a drastic change in the
line-up. Willie Wagner, Werner Stephan and Torsten Herzog left
the band to be replaced by Gerhard "Gagey" Mrozeck, Uli Gross,
British bass player Alan Joe Wroe and his fellow countryman Geff
Harrison. With this line-up, Kin Ping Meh recorded ‘III’, the band’s
third album, in the Summer of 1973. The album featured a wind
section and a female choir. It was mainly because of singer Geff
Harrison’s influence that the band developed a hard rock image.
"The people mainly want to really rock, to be happy and to get
to see something. And that’s all true in our
case", the band explained in a 1973 "Musik Express" interview
and added: "There is not much demand for space and cosmic rock
right now." Kin Ping Meh played concerts with hard rock
superstars like


Deep Purple and

Slade and appeared on a couple of
television shows.


Their fourth
album, Virtues & Sins (1974), earned them comparisons to
the Rolling Stones, Free, The Faces and Spooky Tooth. 1976 saw
the release of ‘Concrete’, a live album that was the last LP
under their old recording contract. After the end of the
recording contract, Harrison and Wroe left the band. The
remaining band members tried a new beginning. With new band
members and a new contract with Bellaphon, they recorded Kin
Ping Meh (1977), but were unable to continue their success
story, mainly because of weak vocal performances. In the Summer
of 1977, the band finally disbanded.


Gerhard Mrozeck
at first joined a funk rock formation called Ooh La La and later
on played very successfully in the bands of Edo Zanki and
Herbert Gronemeyer. Geff Harrison started a solo career. He even
made two very successful tours through the GDR. November 1982
saw a Kin Ping Meh revival concert at Berlin University, but the
new Kin Ping Meh mainly consisted of members of the Harrison
Band. Mrozeck and Weber did not take part. Drummer Kalle Weber
died of a heart attack in 1995.

Musik akrobat dan Musik Modern

Musik akrobat adalah istilah yang dikemukakan Jimmy Page, gitaris Led Zeppelin, utk musik yg diusungnya. Kalo kita mendengarkan musik2 seperti ini mungkin definisi musik dan lagu harus diubah. Keteraturan irama bagi telinga awam sudah tidak ada lagi..

Tidak bakalan kepala kita mengangguk2 dan bergoyang mengikuti irama yg membuat terlena, hal yg dikhawatirkan oleh bbrp ulama sehingga mengharamkannya. Yang ada hanya melongo, mengernyitkan dahi,dan keheranan layaknya melihat pertunjukan akrobat atau sirkus. Bagaimana bisa bergoyang/ mengangguk2 mengikuti irama untuk sebuah lagu seperti Back Dognya Led Zeppelin.

Jimmy page dg gitar distorsi penuh dipadu dg vokal Robert Plant yang spt seng dipukuli (vokalis yang bersejarah karena pernah dalam suatu konser menjebolkan sound system!). Belum lagi drumnya John Bonham yang seharusnya mjd kemudi ketukan menjadi seenak perut. Yang membuat tercengang, angka penjualan musik2 mereka di Amerika sdh melampaui the Beatles.

Sekarang, Dream Theater mungkin tepat juga bila dikatakan mengusung musik akrobat. satu lagu terdiri dari beberapa bagian dan birama berbeda. melongo.. entah kecerdasan otak mereka seperti apa..

‘Dosis’lumrah sebuah lagu umumnya terdiri dari dua/ 3 bagian dengan ketukan 3/4 atau 4/4. Suatu ketika pernah kulihat partitur salah satu mereka; 5/4 1 alinea berikutnya 7/12 lalu …bla bla pffffff…..partitur yang sangat menantang bagi siswa sekolah2 musik…(cat. penulis gak bisa baca partitur krn tdk prnah sekolah musik.)

Dalam konser, hanya keyboardist yg dihadapannya terdapat TV kecil berisi partitur. yang lain gak ada. benar2 gila…. kec. penulis yang tidak tahu. Sbg perbandingan, konser G N R hanya Axl yang melihat teks lagu di TV depan panggung, lainnya tidak perlu karena musik mereka alurnya memang sederhana tetapi teksnya puanjang.

Musik akrobat BELUM TENTU musik hingar bingar yang hanya memekakkan telinga. Musik akrobat bisa ’sendu’ seperti Dissappear-nya Dream Theater. Lagu ini, intro untuk baris PERTAMA saja= 5/4-5/4-6/4-5/4.

Telinga awam bisa suka dengan lagu ini walaupun mengernyitkan dahi lebih dulu. Musik akrobat menurut penulis adalah lagu dan tempo asli yang ‘disembunyikan’ masing-masing personel sdh memahami lagu dan tempo aslinya, namun mereka hanya membayangkannya. sedangkan yg keluar dari bibir atau instrumen sudah lain! Lain nada bahkan birama, bisa dikatakan berantakan tapi pas dan tidak FALS. SepertI bermain akrobat. Mungkin inilah cikal bakal musik modern. Orang tidak lagi sekedar membeli dan mendengarkan lagunya yang enak, tetapi lebih didorong oleh rasa penasaran utk mencari tahu alur ‘tersembunyi’ musiknya. bagi pemain band pemula mungkin tjd diskusi panjang dahulu sblm menyentuh alat musik masing2..

Yang jadi pertanyaan penulis sekarang, mekanisme APA yang membuat telinga seseorang-pemusik/ bukan, bisa mengatakan musik ini enak didengar, musik itu tidak. INI FALS, ITU TIDAK.
Yang pasti mendiskusikan musik adalah sesuatu yg tak terbatas, seperti halnya bunyi itu sendiri.
rentangan senar gitar 1 oktaf lebih tinggi Jaraknya adalah separonya, 1 oktaf lagi separonya lagi demikian seterusnya tak terbatas. Satu-satunya ‘alat musik’ yang ‘cukup’lengkap dan akurat adalah telinga, walaupun hanya 20-20rb Hz. Satu-satunya yg bisa dilakukan hanyalah.. bersyukur pada Sang Pencipta & mengagumi kebesaran-Nya.

Led Zeppelin skrng sdh bubar hanya gara-gara satu personelnya meninggal. Sebuah pilihan bodoh utk ukuran pebisnis. Beda dengan band2 lain yg tetap berusaha eksis; Rolling Stones, satu personelnya mengundurkan diri diganti seekor anjing…. atau tak jauh2, Dewa 19. Mungkin karena Led Zeppelin punya konsep musik, anggota inti dan logo masing2 personel?

Setelah bubar pun, dlm solo karirnya Jimmy page/ Robert Plant tidak ada bau Led Zeppelin sama sekali. Ketika diundang utk nostalgia lagu2 Led Zeppelin, petikan gitar dan warna musik yg dimainkan Page, atau vokal Plant sdh lain.
